Before bub starts rolling, you might notice lots of kicking emerging at that 3-4 month mark!
As your little one kicks their legs, they’re not just wiggling around – they’re mastering the first steps toward big motor milestones like rolling over. Kicking play isn’t just a fun way to pass the time; it’s a critical part of their physical development.
When babies start kicking, they’re discovering that those little legs are part of their body. Every kick helps them understand movement, control, and how their body interacts with the world. They’re also strengthening their neck muscles by looking down at their feet, an important move called a “chin tuck.” This chin tuck is key for them to eventually roll from back to side, and later from back to belly!
Fun Kicking Play Ideas
Here are a few playful ways to help your baby kick while also boosting their physical skills:
1. Make Some Noise with Textures
Grab a sheet of tissue paper and tuck it under a couch cushion or mat, just within reach of those kicking feet. Babies love the crinkling sound! Each kick will reward them with a satisfying noise and sensation, encouraging them to keep moving. Plus, the new texture is a great way to engage their senses.
2. Add a Little Sensory Fun
Babies are all about sensory exploration! Try hanging a sensory toy (like one that crinkles or rattles) near their feet while they’re lying on their back. I also encourage parent’s to place balloons or rattles on their bub’s feet as this will also encourage them to move their legs. As they kick, show them how their legs can make sounds by tapping or moving the toy. It’s a fantastic way to introduce cause and effect while keeping kicking play exciting.
3. Room to Kick Freely
Let your baby stretch out and kick away! Create a little kicking zone by placing them on their back near a play mat that has built-in sound elements. A soft play gym with musical or crinkly features around their feet will motivate them to kick repeatedly, helping to build strength and coordination in those legs.
4. Tuck a rolled up towel or boppy pillow underneath bubs pelvis
If your little one is still struggling to work out kicking, placing a rolled up towel will encourage them to tuck their pelvis under, engaging those core muscles and allowing them to reach for their legs and kick!
Each of these activities not only encourages kicking but also promotes exploration, curiosity, and self-discovery – all while laying the foundation for your baby’s gross motor skills, particularly rolling!
Encourage those tiny feet to get moving with these easy, fun ideas, and watch your baby gain confidence in their movements.
